Why You Should Avoid Posting About Your Divorce on Social Media
These days, many people have no reservations about sharing every detail of their lives on social media. They do so without second thought, and few consider the consequences of pictures, comments, and videos they upload to these platforms. Fewer still realize that everything they upload stays on the platform permanently in some form or another – even if they “delete” it. But there’s one specific subject that you should never post about on social media, and that’s divorce. Let’s find out why.
Woman in Georgia Shares Awkward Divorce Letter
One of the main reasons to stay off social media during a divorce is that everything you say can be used against you. This is because your comments and actions are recorded as if they were written in stone. In addition, the family court can easily establish that it was you who actually wrote these comments and posted certain content. It’s like sending a letter out to everyone you know and signing it.
Funnily enough, this is exactly what one woman from Atlanta did during 2022’s holiday season. Normally, this woman sends out a family update in the form of a written newsletter each year. This year, however, the newsletter focused entirely on one subject: Her impending divorce. This letter highlighted intimate and awkward details about the split, including adulterous affairs.
Her daughter claimed that the letter made her feel embarrassed – but she still went on to take pictures of it and post it on social media. The letter quickly went viral. In total, these intimate details were seen by close to one million people. It’s not clear whether this mother and daughter understand how much damage they’re doing to the divorce proceedings with these actions.
Criticizing Other Parents
In the above situation, there’s one silver lining: The mother’s children are old enough to live on their own. If the divorce also involved a custody battle, these comments posted on social media could have been much worse. In Georgia, judges consider the behavior of parents towards each other when making custody decisions. Openly criticizing and attacking your ex can backfire, causing you to experience negative custody outcomes.
How to Behave on Social Media
Be professional and brief when it comes to posting about your divorce on social media. There’s nothing wrong with announcing that you’re ending your marriage – but be brief. Do not share intimate details, and refrain from making accusations about your ex. If you’re unsure of whether you should post something, check with your divorce lawyer first.
